Couldn't have started the spring better

Our newfound passion - inflatable kayaks!

Today was a good day, it was what I would call the very first spring day here in Germany. About a week ago we decided it was warm enough to try our brand new inflatable kayak. It’s a 2 person kayak called the Hudson, it’s from the Czech manufacturer called Sevylor. I think they go by another name in America but I can’t really remember what they were called. It’s really a top notch kayak, if you’re interested in buying a kayak that’s’ stable, fast and fun to paddle you should get it. Here’s a very in depth review of it, read it and buy it! Totally worth it!.

Anyways, back to today. When I woke up I got a text from my friend telling me he was feeling ill and wasn’t probably gonna make it today. No biggie, I had my girlfriend coming over in just a couple of hours so me and her could always paddle by ourselves. When she got here we threw together some lunch, packed some food and were just about to leave when our friend decided to go with us anyway. The day just got better.

Since this was our first time paddling we didn’t really know where to go. I had looked on several places on Google maps to find some cool rivers, but since the images were too low resolution it was hard to make out if they were paddable or not. We decided to just go with it and see what we would find.

The place where we were gonna set down our kayaks turned out to be someones private property, someone had actually bought the land and was building his house as we came down his driveway. Luckily enough for us he was really kind and told us another place we could go to, it was just a 5 minute drive away so why not. We arrived at the pier, it was actually way better than the first place we went to because we actually had a pier here. We took out the kayaks and nervously started to pump our Sevylor Hudson. I’m always a little skeptical to inflatable boats because you know, they’re just rubber and could puncture rather easy. Plus the kayak has been sitting in my room for 4 months, but luckily no punctures were found. It felt rock solid when fully inflated.

We decided to go down a narrow creek, which soon turned out to be quite the adventure. There were tons of reeds, they were literally everywhere and we had to dodge them here and there. It was great fun when looking back at it. We continued along the creek and suddenly we found some really disturbing sight, someone had killed ferrets and hung them on branches by the creek. It looked really bizarre, like some crazy psycho had tried to decorate the creek or something.

Except tons of reeds, the creek also gave a chance to paddle through and over stick, stones and god knows what. At one part of the creek a tree had fallen down, so we had to get up and walk around it. Luckily the inflatable kayak is so wide I can actually stand up in without falling over, unlike my friend hehe.

Our adventure continued along the creek but we quickly noticed the water was getting shallower and shallower. We soon reached the point where the water was only a couple of inches below the kayak. This is where we decided we were done for the day and headed back. Turns out however that turning around 14 feet kayak is harder than it sounds. When my friend tried to turn around, he actually got stuck because it was so long. We had to come and help him, luckily we managed to drag hard enough to get him unstuck.

Our kayak stayed inflated the whole time and we can’t really complain at all. It worked wonderful and to be honest we expected it to be much worse. Hopefully we will get to use it plenty of more times during the spring and the summer.
